Digitalization is transforming the way we live, work, and travel. At the forefront of this change is ADAC, Europe's largest automobile club, leveraging new technologies to redefine the member experience.

In a recent episode of our podcast Digital Product Talks, Bernd Angermann, Head of Digital Products and User Experience at ADAC, offered a behind-the-scenes look at how the organization is pushing boundaries with innovative apps, accessibility initiatives, and AI-driven solutions.

Your Travel Companions: ADAC’s Top Innovations

When it comes to summer road trips, a few digital tools can go a long way in making the whole experience smoother and safer. We asked Angermann about his travel essentials, and he gave us his insights into three ADAC apps that stand out from the crowd:

1: Roadside Assistance App

Experiencing a breakdown on the side of the road is always stressful, but ADAC’s roadside assistance app makes getting help easier. With GPS location sharing, users can pinpoint their exact position, and real-time tracking shows where the assistance vehicle is – similar to tracking a delivery. Angermann explained that the app provides a sense of security and reduces uncertainty during an already tense situation.

2: Medical App

Health issues while traveling, especially abroad, can be a challenge. This is where the medical app comes in, offering telemedicine appointments with German-speaking doctors. Angermann highlighted its value in addressing health concerns while navigating language barriers in foreign countries. The app also provides access to medication information and first aid tips, making it a handy companion for those unexpected moments.

3: Drive App

Angermann described the drive app as a versatile tool for everyday travel, not just long road trips. Beyond navigation, it offers features like real-time traffic alerts, hazard warnings, and a fuel price comparison tool. When asked about his personal favorites, he mentioned the app's fuel price tool as his go-to solution for saving money on gas.

AppCore: The Foundation of ADAC's Digital Ecosystem

At the heart of ADAC’s digital ecosystem is AppCore, a reliable technical foundation ensuring all apps are top-notch. AppCore ensures consistency across ADAC’s digital portfolio by providing reusable modules, such as mapping functions.

Bernd Angermann further explained:

Instead of developing three separate map modules for different apps, we create one and integrate it into all relevant apps.

This modular approach accelerates development, improves code quality, and allows teams to quickly implement updates without rebuilding entire apps. AppCore's scalability is fundamental to ADAC's ability to deliver reliable digital experiences. It not only saves time and resources but also ensures consistency in quality and user experience across all applications.

Overcoming Challenges: Accessibility and Beyond

We were curious to see how accessibility fits into ADAC's digital strategy. With the upcoming European Accessibility Act (EAA), the topic is a growing priority. Digitalization comes with its challenges, and ADAC has been proactive in optimizing its applications to meet diverse user needs.

Angermann explained some of the progress they've made, including improving keyboard navigation, adjusting color contrasts, and increasing font sizes for readability. He shared an example:

We adjusted a blue shade in collaboration with the brand management team to improve contrast for better readability.

These efforts reflect ADAC’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that all users can access their services effortlessly.

Paving the Way: Success Stories & Future Innovations

One of ADAC’s standout successes is the roadside assistance app, which has earned an impressive 4.9-star rating in app stores. Angermann credits this to more than just great functionality:

The app reassures users during stressful situations, but the real magic happens when our technicians provide excellent service, completing the experience.

We also discussed ADAC’s plans for the future, including their use of artificial intelligence. Projects like Smart Connect aim to proactively identify potential vehicle issues before they occur, enhancing safety and reducing the likelihood of breakdowns. According to Angermann, AI will play a key role in improving both internal processes and member services in the years ahead.

Empowering Teams: A Culture of Digital Transformation

ADAC’s digital evolution isn’t just about technology – there’s also a cultural shift. Through initiatives like the digital campus, ADAC empowers employees with training and workshops on digitalization, fostering a mindset of continuous learning.

Angermann highlighted the importance of collaboration, explaining that regular meetings are held between designers and the brand management team to align on corporate identity. This approach ensures that the brand's identity is consistently reflected in ADAC's digital products. We also discussed how the team's tight integration ensures that each app has a distinctly "ADAC" look and feel – consistent, trustworthy, and focused on delivering real value to members.

Can Tradition Lead Digital Change?

ADAC proves that even a long-established institution can lead the way in digital transformation. By combining cutting-edge technology with a human-centered approach, ADAC is delivering innovative solutions that simplify and improve the lives of its members. Their journey shows that with the right strategy, culture, and tools, it's possible to achieve exactly that.
