carlog Web Portal & App from a Single Mold
The new carlog web portal and partly native app intertwine perfectly to deliver the best experience depending on your unique needs.
19 countries, 10 brands, 1 platform: Along with the relaunch, we also developed a flexible design system that integrates all Porsche Holding brands.
We soon realized that this challenge called for something bigger. Our flexible design team size (ranging from 2 to 8 designers at times), commitment to high quality, and transparent budgeting were crucial for the project's success.
With carlog being deeply integrated and connected to the services and websites of all Volkswagen brands, the design system had to be flexible and adaptable to different brand themes.
Given Porsche Holding’s microservice approach, we had to accommodate the different technical contexts and stakeholders with clever concepts.
Bringing internal teams together to contribute to the whole user journey was a challenge for us. However, this project clearly showcased how design and research can inspire teams and drive them to join this new journey.
With many teams, initiatives, and products set to connect to the design system and carlog in the future, it was crucial to focus on the core functionality of the well-defined carlog MVP – while keeping any future expansion in mind.
Transitioning from an app reliant on web views, we faced the challenge of creating a new native experience for core features while seamlessly integrating additional web-based functionalities.
Developing a Comprehensive Design System
Emerging from an outdated design that caused friction across multiple user journeys, carlog's role as an SSO provider emphasized the need for a cohesive design system. The new design and design system focuses on reusability, ensuring seamless alignment of concepts and functions across the larger Porsche Holding ecosystem and its extensive range of product teams and brands.
Being adaptable yet unique was the central challenge in our design strategy, known as the User Experience Identity (UXi). Our design needed to integrate seamlessly across all 10 Volkswagen brands, which led us to focus on the core values: easy, high quality, and reliable. All of this helped shape carlog’s design landscape.

Meet the First Product: carlog
Facing a tight schedule, we had to strictly align the scope and feasibility with development and the product owner. By focusing on the most efficient collaboration methods, we made sure both our design team and Porsche Holding’s development team could deliver on time. This brought a new level of dedication and efficiency to the project, ensuring seamless teamwork and timely results.
Even with technical limitations, we always strive for the best possible solutions to create a great experience. For our client, we developed new concepts for all existing carlog features and significantly improved the information architecture. Now, booking a service appointment at your local garage is easier than ever.
The brand new visual design and logo represent a big step forward for carlog towards becoming a modern, convenient and stable platform within Porsche Holding’s services. With its concise typography and partially customized icons, the design ensures clarity for carlog users despite soft edges and shadows.

Last but Not Least: Strengthening The Product Ecosystem through Research
Since the scope for the core carlog MVP was quite clear, and larger improvements were not technically feasible, we opted for a rather hands-on approach, still embracing frequent user testing to mitigate risks.
However, as the design system and MVP grew and new features emerged on the horizon, we conducted thorough research on how Porsche Holding could support B2C and B2B customers in their future car-buying journeys. These journeys would inevitably involve interactions with carlog or elements of the design system. The insights gained were valuable and shared with great enthusiasm across teams within Porsche Holding.
